Toronto is eerily quiet during the last few weeks of August as people take off on vacation before school starts and work resumes. The days are getting shorter and fall is inevitably on the horizon.
There can be something unsettling about August. For many people, the month creates a feeling of sadness. Maybe from the realization that most of the year is already behind us, with Halloween and holiday ads looming. Even Starbucks seems to be rushing fall. I mean seriously…you want me to have a Pumpkin Spice Latte in August?
Poet Sylvia Plath scribed it perfectly: “August rain: the best of the summer gone, and the new fall not yet born. The odd uneven time.”
Are you feeling the August blues? You’re not alone.
Experts believe summer seasonal affective disorder (SAD) affects less than 1 percent of the population making it much rarer than the winter variety yet it is nonetheless very real. Symptoms include decreased appetite, trouble sleeping, irritability and weight loss.
Here are a few tips to help get you through this transitioning time:
1) Take care of your body: Your physiological health has a huge impact on your emotional health. If you’re in a funk, limit alcohol and junk food, get enough sleep and exercise.
2) Engage in activities you like: The last thing you want to do is allow yourself to feel isolated. Spend time down by the lake, go to a movie or even better … go to the CNE ! Force yourself to do things that you would normally find pleasurable.
3) Don’t allow yourself to be overwhelmed by social media: Remind yourself that for every vacation picture your friends post, there are those other photos they dare not post. You know, the ones of them not having fun. Don’t get caught up in the illusion of clever image management.
